10th Annual Private Sector Conference

From November 8-9, 2007, the Confederation of Mozambican Industries (CTA) convened its tenth Annual Private Sector Conference (CASP) in Maputo. Opened this year by the President of the Republic of Mozambique, Armando Guebuza, the conference was attended by the Prime Minister, key ministers of the Economic Cabinet, and more than 700 people from the private sector, government, academia and donors, and representatives of Mozambique’s nine provinces.

The year’s theme, Mozambican and Regional Integration, was chosen by CTA as the Southern African Development Community (SADC) free trade agreement will be 93% of trade tariff free in 2008. The conference examined multiple questions including:

  • What implications will regional integration have on Mozambique and Mozambican enterprises?
  • What is the role of the Mozambican Government in regional integration, and;
  • How will access to finance limitations in Mozambique impact the private sector in Mozambique in adapting and integrating regionally? In particular, how can Mozambique resolve some of its access to finance limitations.

The CTA conference provides an ideal forum for private sector enterprises to better understand how to benefit from and take advantage of ever-increasing African and World integration and the resulting increase in openness and competitiveness.

The conference also provided the opportunity for public examination of Mozambique’s progress in reducing the cost of doing business (both in terms of regulatory, technical, and non-technical barriers); for the presentation of new data and the introspective examination of Mozambique’s progress in comparison with that of other developing countries; and for presenting specific goals with definite timelines.

The Private Sector Conference (hosted by the Confederation of Business Associations in Mozambique or CTA) brings together representatives from the private sector community, traders, government, NGO’s etc in an effort to encourage productive dialogue. The objective is to accelerate private sector development and economic growth across Mozambique.
